Opium poppy in Afghanistan is the largest crop in Afghanistan. Opium is not only the largest crop of Afghani farmers but also big source of revenue for Talibans in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is the largest opium producer in the world and produces almost 90 percent of world’s opium. According to one farmer in Afghanistan Drug lords come to the farm and provide seeds along with loans and when opium harvest is ready they come and collect it hence opium production is very lucrative for the poor farmers.
In Afghanistan Southern province of Kandahar and Helmand are the largest opium producers and they produce almost 75 percent of total opium in Afghanistan. These are the areas where bloodiest battles between western forces and Taliban are going on.
Poppy cultivation is so profitable for the people of Afghanistan that they earn four times more profit as compared with wheat production. Most of the drugs made from this opium production end up in the shape of heroine in western world.
Taliban earn almost 155 million dollars a year due to this opium production. The situation of poppy production is worst in Afghanistan and getting serious day by day.
